MPC Licenses Fabric Engine to Customize Production Pipeline

Customizable Frameworks and Powerful Coding Language Enable Speedy Development of 3D Apps and Add-Ons; To Be Deployed Across Worldwide Network

Montreal, Canada – (December 03, 2013) – Today Fabric Software Inc (formerly Fabric Engine Inc) announces that award-winning VFX studio Moving Picture Company (MPC), a division of Technicolor, has purchased a global site license of Fabric Engine, a development platform for building high-performance tools and applications for use in production. MPC will be using Fabric Splice (an API for exposing Fabric within other applications) to augment their existing pipeline, and using Fabric SceneGraph (a standalone framework for building complete applications) to build next-generation tools that fully leverage modern hardware.

“We expect our use of Fabric Engine to transform the productivity of our developers and technical artists,” said Nick Cannon, Global Director of Technology for Film, “allowing us to develop tools that we previously did not have the time to write and ultimately will dramatically improve the productivity of our artists through higher performance tools.”

“We had planned to write our own next generation application framework to get us into the next stage of VFX making,” said Damien Fagnou, Global Head of Software, “however, when we started reviewing FabricSG it lined up so well with what we wanted, and the performance was so impressive that it made much more sense to partner with Fabric Software and focus on building applications on top of their framework.”

“What our TDs really need is a simple environment to write their tools in, and Fabric Splice is perfect for this. We have always used scripting at MPC because our TDs and developers love the simplicity of it. The programming workflow for scripting makes for very fast iterations, but too often the runtime speed is not good enough. Now with Splice we can have the ease of use of scripting with the speed of a compiled language like C++”

Fabric Engine is a framework for building custom 2D and 3D applications for production pipelines. It is designed to be accessible to TDs familiar with Python and Qt, as well as programmers that are looking for ways to properly leverage the power of modern hardware in their tools. With Fabric Engine as the base, developers can quickly create a wide range of high-performance applications – including animation tools, image and video processing, real-time rendering, motion capture processing, simulation and much more.
